Period Pain (dysmenorrhea)

Dysmenorrhea means painful periods, and is experienced by a large number of women during their menstruation. These menstrual cramps are usually felt in the lower abdomen, but can also be associated with low back pain, or pain radiating down the legs.

Painful periods can be of 2 categories:

  1. Primary dysmenorrhea – most common, pain usually in lower abdomen and lower back for 1-2 days before period and lasting into the period. These uterine contractions causing pain, are usually not associated with any underlying medical problem
  2. Secondary dysmenorrhea – results from underlying medical conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids or pelvic inflammatory disease.

Painful periods maybe accompanied by headaches, diarrhea, nausea & vomiting, and these symptoms tend to worsen with lack of sleep, alcohol & caffeine consumption, and/or emotional stress. This medical issue of period pain can be managed with acupuncture and herbs.

At Eastern Harmony Clinic we have seen that acupuncture and herbs help regulate the cycle and decrease the cramping.

Recommendations are also made for dietary and lifestyle changes to maintain a pain free menstrual cycle.
